Electric Car
By: Brad

It was seven o’clock on a Monday morning and Rick Hart was sitting at his counter reading the newspaper. He looked at his wife and said, “will you look at that, the gas prices raised by twelve cents.” His wife just laughed and said, “don’t worry, we have enough money to pay for gas.” Rick said, “ if the gas prices keep raising like that we will have to worry about money. “ Well, I have to leave for work I will see you when I get home.” Rick kissed his wife on the cheek and left to go to work. On the way to work Rick called his friend Bob Luck. When Bob answered Rick asked, “ did you see the paper today?” Bob answered, “ yeah why?” “The gas prices raised twelve cents,” Rick screamed. Bob said, “I’ve got to go, by. At work, the buzz was about the gas prices. About half way through the day, Bob’s boss called him into his office. He sat him down and said, “ I need you to find a way to make a car that runs on a re-chargable battery. Bob just looked at him with a blank face and said, I’ll try.

When Bob got out of his bosses office, he called together all of the people who make some part of the car. He told them just what his boss told him and he said he wanted them working on it right away. For the rest of the day Bob started drawing out ideas for the car. When he got home he called Rick and told him about the car. Rick was excited and he told Bob to tell him about all of the features when they were set. For the next week or so, Bob worked very hard on all of the car’s features. After about a week or so, Bob visited his boss again to see if he liked his ideas. When Bob walked in his bosses office he sat down and told him about the car. He said, the volt can go up to 40 miles on an electric charge alone and about 400 miles using an onboard gas-burning generator to recharge it’s lithium-ion battery. A lithium-ion battery is supposed to be like a giant cell-phone battery. Also, an overnight charge is supposed to use annually less energy than a typical refrigerator. Another thing is, it will have a touch-screen display vehicle information and Bluetooth capability for cell phones. It will also have a touch screen climate and infotainment controls and an optional navigational system and an onboard hard drive for maps and music storage.

When Bob was about to leave his boss told him he liked all of the technical stuff but he needed to know more about the car itself. Bob left that day feeling very confident about himself, but he knew that he needed more details for his boss. That night Bob’s wife asked him how it was going with the electric car. He said that he wasn’t telling anyone but his boss about the car until it was done. His wife just agreed with him and went on with making dinner. For the next two or three weeks Bob was rarely doing anything but working on the car. He barely talked to anybody but his wife. After Bob was done with more of the details he wanted to show his boss but he had to wait a week because his boss was gone at important business meetings. The first day Bob’s boss was back he rushed to work to tell him about the details of the car. Bob told his boss this, it was a four door car estimated to be about the size of a Toyota Prius or the upcoming Honda Insigt. All of these cars share some characteristics. It is also supposed to have a short and rounded nose, an arched roofline and a tall back. Also, it consists of 17 inch Goodyear tires that will be fitted into the production version. One more thing is, the recharging port will be located under the side mirror.

For the next month Bob supervised the crew making the volt. Then one day Bob’s boss called him into his office and told him that they had to get wrapped up with making the volt because this whole time Toyota had been making an electric car too. When Bob told everyone this a lot of people started working day and night to get the car done. When the car was almost done something very bad happened. A tornado struck and wiped out the whole area where they were making the Volt. Luckily, the Toyota plant got destroyed too. It took about a year to rebuild the building but it turned out to be even nicer than before. The bad thing about the tornado was the almost finished Volt got completely destroyed. It was very depressing to all of the people who worked on it see it get destroyed. It was even worse because all of the papers about it were in the bosses’ desk and got destroyed. It took about six months to rebuild the car because all of the people working on it remembered what they did.

About two years after the tornado, Chevy announced that they were going to release the Volt onto the market. Also, after the tornado Toyota stopped trying to make their electric car. When the Volt first got released, people were still questioning it’s quality. After about a half of a year, people started buying the volt like crazy. Some people were saving up to 1,000 dollars a year by not having to buy gas. After the Volt started getting very successful, Bob’s boss moved his job up to a higher level which meant he made more money. Also, Rick bought a Volt and was very pleased with how it turned out along with many others. Even though disaster struck, Bob still fought through it and became very successful. It turned out that the Volt became the best selling car ever to be released into the market.
